How to become a youtuber?

Poster videos on youtube hoping to bring something new to thousands of subscribers, is not so simple. First of all, we have to find a topic that we like or that we are good at or passionate about.

Indeed, there are hundreds of different kinds of videos, from humor to science channel, bloggers or even people playing online video games. So there is something for everyone but here it is...

What do you need to master?

In addition to finding the idea that will make you stand out, you need to have the time to take the shots, and have a minimum of knowledge in video editing. With the help of more or less complex software. At the beginning it can be a hobby, then over the months it can become a full time job. Creativity and originality are required.

Don't think you'll make a living with a YouTube channel until you have a certain number of subscribers and views. It's a long process and requires patience, hard work and sometimes monetary investment. Indeed, if at the beginning, you can simply film with your Iphone, you may have to invest in a microphone, a stabilizer or other practical accessories.

Bodybuilding video : My experience

In addition to being a sports coach and men's physique competitor, I decided in 2015 to open my youtube channel on bodybuilding in order to share with as many people as possible, my lifestyle in Miami, but especially my training, my competitions, my tips, my recipes and many other things. I didn't start my channel with my phone like many people do because it wasn't about sitting in front of the camera and making simple explanatory videos. I wanted diversity and originality. This doesn't mean that I don't use my iPhone to shoot a few sequences from time to time. In fact, if you don't have the means, you can start with a good phone and a pole that is also a selfie stick and stand on feet.

So I immediately decided in 2015 to invest in quality equipment to start my you tube channel. I'm not a specialist in this field but I just wanted to share with you the equipment I use.

Canon EOS 70D

As a beginner, it took me a few months to get used to the Canon EOS 70D and to understand the features of this camera. At the very beginning I used it only in automatic mode, then I understood that it was essential to use the manual mode or scene mode to make my own adjustments with such a state-of-the-art equipment. To use the automatic mode is to use 10% of its real capabilities. It's a mistake to think that buying state-of-the-art equipment is better. When you don't know much about it, it takes time to learn. It's like anything else.

Coming back to this camera, it has an automatic focus mode that targets the person directly.

I can directly transfer my shooting photos to my phone thanks to the integrated wifi.

With hindsight I find its weight quite heavy and that is not very practical but I still use it today for most of my shots.

While shooting with a photographer a few weeks later for Muscular development magazine, I discussed with the photographer about the equipment he had. Being a novice, I first wanted to do with what I had before investing in a new lens that allowed me to have a better video rendering.

Canon EF 50mm SLR lens

I am not an expert in the field to give a really precise opinion on the SLR lens canon EF 50. What I can tell you is that when it comes to video, you get a similar result to the original lens zoomed all the way in with a blurred background that gives a bit more of a cinema look. The only downside is that it doesn't have a built-in stabilizer and you have to move away a lot for traditional shots. If you're talking during your videos, then you'll definitely need a microphone. And if you want more quality, you'll need a stabilizer.

As I said before, the camera is already heavy by itself, adding the stabilizer will only make it heavier and therefore lose handling.

Which microphone is the most suitable?

I realized a few weeks later that the original sound was fine indoors in a closed environment but that I needed a more suitable microphone when shooting outdoors.

So I bought a RODE microphone Videomic GO to improve the sound quality of my videos.

After 1 year of weekly video, I took a Movo microphone with built-in lapel microphone for videos that are a bit more theoretical or for training sessions because talking during a weight training session with the background noise in the room was quite unpleasant in my videos.

The best drone

Living in Miami, and having many idyllic settings, I wanted to treat myself by acquiring a Drone dji mavic pro in order to take pictures of the sky and integrate them in the intros of my videos.

With this kind of drone, it is necessary to take a lot of precautions when we try to pilot it the first times, the fear to make a mistake is present unceasingly. With its remote control connected to the phone, we have the image in our hands. In terms of image quality, this is probably the best flying camera in existence. There is a beginner mode that allows the drone to stay within a certain perimeter.

It folds up and can be carried anywhere. It is very light, and contains several interesting modes such as Follow me. The drone can follow us by making hand gestures when we walk or even while cycling. The takeoff and landing mode is of course automatic. Finally, the battery lasts for about 20 minutes, which is why it is worth buying several.

Video image stabilizers

As a result, I invested in a DJI Osmo Handheld which was much lighter when I was on the move with a built-in stabilizer and an adapter on the car that allowed me to get some nice landscape shots that I could incorporate into my videos.

Finally I acquired stabilizers to make all my videos smoother and more professional.

So I use for my Iphone the Dji Osmo mobile that fits all phones.

And for the Canon camera, I acquired the stabilizer feiyu A 2000. However, looking back again, I would choose the DJI brand today.

Finally, to transport all this video material, I have my LOWEPRO bag
