To play Batman in Matt Reeves' latest film, Robert Pattinson had to undergo a weight-training program intense and follow a diet of weight gain. Unaccustomed to frequenting gyms, the 35-year-old British actor has imposed several weekly workouts to put himself in the shoes of the famous Bruce Wayne.

A successful start to your career

Born in 1986 in the suburbs of London, Robert Pattinson is a key actor of his generation.

He became known in 2005, in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He plays the young Cedric Diggory, alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.

This performance allows him to get the role of the vampire Edward Cullen in the famous saga Twilightwhose first episode was released in France in 2011.

Robert Pattinson also played numerous characters in independent films. His career took a new turn in 2019, when he was chosen by Warner Bros to play Batman, with Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.

A dry physique, far from the last Batman actors

But with a rather dry physique (1.85 meters for 75 kilos), the task was difficult. In the world of DC Comics and in the imagination of fans, Batman is a muscular superhero. By comparison, his predecessor Ben Affleck was 1.93 meters tall and weighed over 200 pounds when he played the Gotham City vigilante in films such as Justice League or Batman vs Superman.

Robert Pattinson had to work out to play in The Batman by director Matt Reeves. His goal: to take about 5 extra kilos to reach 80 kilos. During the many months of confinement related to the pandemic, however, the actor refused to work on his physical condition, despite the insistence of his sports coach and the production of the feature film.

I think that if you train all the time, you are part of the problem. You're setting a precedent. Nobody was doing that in the 1970s. Even James Dean wasn't really muscular!

Robert Pattinson

He finally agreed to to get stronger 3 months before the beginning of the shooting. For those who have seen the film, the result is correct, but not really impressive. Robert Pattinson does seem to have put on some muscle mass if you compare his body to the one of his previous movies. But the Batman costume plays a lot on the visual impression on screen.

In terms of physique, he is light years ahead of Ben Affleck, or even Christian Bale who also played Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight. It is also far from the muscularity of superheroes such as Superman (Henry Cavil), Thor (Christopher Hemsworth), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) or Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).

Pattinson's training to play Batman

Robert Pattinson fully assumes the fact that he does not like physical activity. Nevertheless, he had to do violence to himself in order to put on the costume of the batman.

During 3 months, the British actor multiplied the high intensity sports activities to sculpt his body and make his abs visible.

The training program of Robert Pattinson included cardio and weight training.

In terms of cardioHe did 3 runs of 5 to 10 kilometers per week. He also did boxing with punching bags, most likely to eliminate body fat and to prepare for the fight scenes in the film.

On the side muscle strengtheningIn the past, he favored military-style functional exercises in the form of a circuit. He trained a lot in the sand, doing squats with weighted bags, for example. He also did sessions in the weight room, based on polyarticular movements to develop the different muscle groups.

For the record, Robert Pattinson stopped working out as soon as the film was shot The Batman completed.

The actor's diet

On the food side, Robert Pattinson has made a slight gain in muscle mass.

Each day, his goal was to consume 2700 calories about, in order to develop his musculature. Quite logical for a man of his size. His diet included a lot of carbohydrates and proteins, and very little fat.

I also tested the training and diet of Robert Pattinson in this video.

Breakfast, the first of its 6 daily mealsThis was a 500-calorie, high-carbohydrate product:

  • 2 whole hard-boiled eggs
  • 40 grams of oatmeal
  • 150 milliliters of almond milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1 glass of orange juice

For the morning snack (around 10 am), Robert Pattinson used to eat 400 calories:

  • 150 grams of tuna
  • 4 rice cakes
  • 20 grams of peanut butter

For lunch (500 calories), the British actor favored foods well known to bodybuilders:

  • 180 grams of cooked chicken breast
  • 200 grams of sweet potatoes
  • vegetables (e.g. zucchini and peppers)

For the more original afternoon snack (350 calories), the Batman actor consumed :

  • 20 grams of oatmeal crackers (low sugar)
  • 180 grams of cottage cheese
  • 150 grams of red fruits (strawberries, blueberries, etc.)

Robert Pattinson's dinner (600 calories) was again rather classic, with :

  • 200 grams of lean beef
  • 200 grams of basmati rice
  • 150 grams of green beans

Finally, he had a final 350-calorie meal before bed to complete his nutritional intake :

  • 200 milliliters of almond milk
  • 30 grams of whey protein
  • 100 grams of blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • a few spinach leaves

Conclusion

Unlike other players who are more comfortable in this exercise, the physical preparation of Robert Pattinson for Batman was not a pleasure. On screen, it makes for a less athletic superhero than usual. If you've already seen the movie, don't hesitate to tell me in the comments what you think of Batman's physique in this opus.

  1. Complimentary embarrassing to see him as Batman. Fan of the first hour, in all the comics Batman is at least classic physical. Patinson should go back to his vampire movies and let Ben Affleck take over the role. The guy didn't respect anyone by trying to make a fragile Batman.
